Mammalayil family moved to Ezhakkaranad from Poothrikka, originating from the Naduvileveettil family. Naduvileveettil Chacko had six children, two sons and four daughters. When they grew up and married, the younger son, Isaac, stayed at the ancestral house in Poothrikka, while the elder son, Varkey, moved to Mammalayil Purayidam in Ezhakkaranad. Our great-grandfather, Varkey, settled here four generations ago. Mammalayil Purayidam spanned 40 acres, beginning at Mankudimala and ending at Periyakavu Temple.
Varkey had six children: two sons and four daughters. Agriculture was the livelihood for 90% of the rural population, and child marriage and high mortality rates were common. Chacko married and stayed at Mamala Purayidam, while Markose lived at Mankudi Purayidam. Unfortunately, Chacko fell ill and died at the age of 29, with his burial being the first funeral service held at Mar Michael Church, Vettithara. After Varkey's death, Markose moved to Mamala Purayidam to maintain the family home. He married Annam from the Manapurathu family in Manakunnam. Markose and Annam had three sons and four daughters. Appachan was the eldest of all sons.
Tragically, Annam's life was shattered when she lost her husband. With seven children, her situation was dire. However, her strong faith in God, inspired by the Bible verse from Jeremiah 49:11 “Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let your widows trust in Me,” gave her the courage to move forward. The support from the Naduvileveettil family, her parents, and her resilient children helped her overcome her difficulties. Appachan, the eldest son, took on the responsibility of caring for the entire family.
